Introduction

New York City is one of the earliest cities in the United States to gentrify. Within this city, many of the neighborhoods went through gentrification at its own pace. Starting in the late 1960s, the East Village was undergoing gentrification that changed it to the neighborhood that we see today. The neighborhood was often considered the last area you would want to live in because of many of the issues the neighborhood was facing. The area was run down and was not the best place you want to be in or live in. The area also had a drug problem which also adds to why the neighborhood was often seen as a bad place to live in. Even through all of these issues, the area was fairly big and the housing was very cheap so it was affordable for many of those who are very poor. However, due to gentrification the issues that the East Village used to have are gone, such as the neighborhood getting new buildings and older buildings being remodeled or renovated. The drug problem was significantly reduced and the neighborhood started to get a lot of people to move in because of all of the new changes. The only problem with the gentrification is that the prices went up significantly and the neighborhood that once housed the poor now housed people of the middle class, kicking out those who can’t afford the new raise in rent.
