After gentrification

After gentrification started to happen in the 1970s, the area looks a lot nicer with old apartment complexes being rebuilt into luxury buildings or just remodeled into a much nicer buildings. Furthermore, there were more buildings opening in the area like delis, shopping malls, places to get supplies, and schools. However, with these new changes the area was no longer friendly to the poor as the rent is heavily increased and many small business owners who previously had a business in the East Village were forced out by bigger businesses. In their place, a new larger industry takes over the small businesses area and builds their own business. A lot of times, larger industries not only takes over smaller businesses but they also take the land of other buildings by buying out the property forcing those who still lived in those buildings to be forcefully removed. Many of the previous residents have left because of the area being much more expensive than they can afford while new people are moving in like artist, students, hippies, and middle class families. Almost all of the previous issues have been removed such as the drug problem, murders, and robberies but there was still occasions when these happen.
